Setting up a business? Here’s some information about how to register a business name.

A couple of points before you start:

    • Sole Traders, Partnerships/Trusts
if you choose to operate as a sole trader, partnership or a trust, and not as a company, then you will have to register your business name with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
    • If your business name is your first name and surname, then you don’t need to register a business name
    • You must have either an ABN or an ABN application reference number
You will need to have an ABN or be in the process of applying for one through the Australian Business Register (ABR) website
    • Registration of a business name does not in itself give you any exclusive rights to its use — only a trade mark can give you that kind of protection
